Welcome to Dunya Restaurant, Bar and Balcony - located in the old center of Lhasa nearby the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple.
The idea of Dunya originated from Tibetan friends and foreign guides who wanted a place to relax and enjoy good food. The wish was to create a hygienic environment where locals and visitors could meet, eat safely, drink, listen to music and play darts. The desire was a place that was Tibetan and ¡®home¡¯. At first the legalities and practicalities were overwhelming then, as an American, a Dutchman and a Tibetan expanded from three to five people Dunya was born.
The word Dunya means ¡®the world¡¯ in more than ten languages ¨C Arabic, Hausa, Turkish, Uzbek, Farsi, Pashto, Urdu, Hindi, Nepali, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. As we are situated in Lhasa, on top of the world and are from around the world, the name Dunya was chosen. The ideas which formed Dunya are the same standards we strive to uphold. That is to serve excellent cuisine in a clean, cozy (gezellig) atmosphere.
Serving an excellent selection of international and Tibetan dishes, our kitchen meets European hygienic standards, with a foreign chef, and we purchase only top quality meats and vegetables. All vegetables are washed in purified water, we do not use any chemical tendorizers to soften meat and we use pure sunflower oil. We also provide organically processed Yak cheese from Tibet.
In the restaurant you will meet two of the partners; Kristin (American) and Jannette (Dutch), as well as several special young Tibetan men and women. Upstairs in the western-style Bar you will meet Fred (Dutch) another of the managing partners.
We are pleased that during the past few years our staff has greatly improved their English and are eager to make your visit a delight. Together we have also provided opportunities for some poorer villages. The restaurant supports the Tibetan Cheese Project.
